Interstate 25 follows this historic north-south corridor, while Goat Hill rises near downtown and Sugarite Canyon State Park begins about six miles away.
The Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail crossed Raton Pass before descending toward the community. Raton's Downtown Historic District reflects the rail and commercial growth that followed, connecting the old trail corridor to the Town travelers see today.
Look across the Town and surrounding landscape from Goat Hill, spend time in the historic downtown district, or continue to Sugarite Canyon State Park for hiking, fishing and wildlife watching. The park has more than 20 miles of trails, and visitors should check current alerts before heading into areas with limited service.
